In response to today’s launch of the NGOs joint campaign on hunger – IF – Shadow Secretary of State for International Development Ivan Lewis MP said:
It is beyond belief or justification that in the twenty-first century one billion people go to bed hungry every night. That’s why Labour in government trebled international aid to the poorest countries and led the way on the commitment to spend 0.7 per cent of GNI on official development assistance. And it’s why we support British NGOs as they come together to reiterate the moral case for UK aid while urging the Tory-led Government to put right their broken promise and ensure this commitment is enshrined in law.
But even more significant is the campaign’s recognition that aid alone will not eliminate hunger or poverty. It is important we galvanise public support behind the big global changes which are essential including the commitment of Governments and companies to openness about the fair use of resources, investment in agriculture, a concerted attack on tax dodging and the protection of peoples land rights.
