LABOUR PARTY CONFERENCE 2026

This year we were delighted to work with a wide range of partners at the Labour Party conference to deliver a series of events focussed on international development.

At our “in-conversation event” co-hosted with the Coalition for Global prosperity and the Labour Foreign Policy Group, the Guardian’s Heather Stewart interviewed Development minister Kirsty McNeill, who spoke passionately and powerfully about her priorities – building on her excellent speech delivered at SOAS last month.

We were pleased to join Bond for our annual international development rally which featured speeches from Romilly Greenhill, David Taylor MP, LCID Chair Heather Staff, development minister Kirsty McNeill MP and the Zambian High Commissioner Her Excellency Macenje “Che Che” Mazoka, who gave a strong rallying call ahead of the G20 for need for reforms to the G20’s common framework for debt relief.

At our G20 panel with Bond and the New Economics Foundation, MPs Joe Powell and Liam Bryne set out the compelling cases for tackling illicit financial flows and tax avoidance and the leading role that the UK could play in reforming global reforms to development finance.

Global health remained high on the agenda at conference, and at our event with Malaria no more and Action for Global health, the audience was reminded of the phenomenal progress that has been made in tackling global disease thanks to the UK’s investment in multilateral institutions like the Global Fund and GAVI, and of the importance of investing in resilience and preparedness.

At our event with the Fabian society and the Fairtrade foundation, Kenyan Coffee farmer Martin Kinyua told us about their important campaign to ensure workers receive fair wages. At a roundtable with the Co-op’s top lines were: how do we work together to ensure fair pay and fair work to ensure global conflict does not become the norm?

Foreign office minister and former member of the LCID exec Stephen Doughty MP joined the Coalition for Prosperity for a private dinner with MPs where he highlighted the critical and often overlooked crises in Lebanon and Yemen, and the important work that the government is doing across government to tackle the root causes of conflict and instability.

It was fantastic to see so many of our members and supporters in Liverpool- please do spread the work about joining LCID, and we look forward to seeing you again next year!
