Great news today as the World Health Organisation announced that malaria deaths have fallen by over 20% over the last decade.
The last Labour Government made the provision of bed nets to prevent transmission of malaria a real priority and between 2001 and 2010 DFID helped deliver over 14 million bed nets to countries with high malaria burdens. A White Paper pledged to deliver a further 10 million bed nets each year between 2010 and 2013. We were also committed to supporting research into malaria treatments and vaccines, with funding from the UK reaching at least £5m a year by 2010.
