DFID to take a lead on resolving the dispute between the UK Government and the exiled Chagos islanders – i.e. by encouraging the Government to drop its ECtHR court battle with the islanders and restore their human rights, and then providing the funding needed to allow a resettlement to take place.

DFID could and should also be taking action to assist the exiled Chagos islanders living in Mauritius, the Seychelles, the UK and elsewhere – many are still living in poverty 40 years after their exile. Those in Mauritius are in need of proper housing, in particular.
